NHLPA Executive Director Bob Goodenow Steps Down

A Decade of Unprecedented Riches for Players

Bob Goodenow, who helped NHL players gain unprecedented riches over the last decade, is stepping down as head of the NHL Players Association. Goodenow, who has served as the NHLPA's Executive Director since 1992, announced his decision in a statement released on Wednesday.

A Respectful Relationship

Goodenow said he has "nothing but respect" for the NHL and its commissioner, Gary Bettman. He also thanked the players for their support over the years. "It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as your Executive Director," Goodenow said. "I will always cherish the memories of our time together."

Critic of the League

Goodenow has been a vocal critic of the league in recent years, particularly over the cancellation of the 2004-05 season due to a labor dispute. He has also been critical of the league's salary cap, which he believes has stifled player salaries.

Closed-Door Meeting

In late February 2005, NHL owners and Goodenow met behind closed doors in an attempt to resolve their differences. However, the talks broke down and the season was canceled. Goodenow's resignation is a major blow to the NHLPA. He is a respected figure in the hockey world and his departure will likely create a power vacuum within the union.
